As one would expect for anything from Powermatic, the tool rests are heavy - perhaps heavier than necessary. But, there is one obvious thing they could have done better for the ones designed for specific lathes. I know all the Powermatics have 1" tool posts and can be used with any of the machines, but if the design intent of a rest is to be used with a specific machine, especially for the post that is shipped with the lathe, then gee, why not have the post length such that if you center the banjo hole over the near way, the post just drops in and is perfectly centered on the spindle? The duh factor here is considerable. It would have been so easy to do this as a part of the manufacturing process.I just got a new PM2014. The 8" tool rest that ships with the machine is just barely long enough to clamp centered, and this 6" one is way too long. So, I'll be modifying both of them accordingly. I'll cut this 6" one down to the right length and make a little plug, perhaps from the scrap, to use for alignment under the other one. Even the cheapest Chinese machinists lathes would not be designed so casually about one of their key specs. They may have some rigidity issues, but their nominal specs would be right on.
